Day 18 (21 Sep) — Trans-Canada Highway 16

Smithers to Prince George

A lovely morning. Breakfast today at our favourite A&W. We still had coupons left from Edmonton.

Today's leg was short. We drove about 300 km along roads where the autumn leaves were still beautiful and arrived in Prince George, a city of about 100,000. Prince George really is a transport hub: south to Vancouver, west to Prince Rupert on the Pacific, east to the Rocky Mountains, and north to the far north. The main roads in all four directions meet in this city.

For the next two nights we stayed at the Prince Motel, which we had looked up in Japan. It was one of the cheapest motels we used; booking online in advance made it just 49 dollars a night. But being cheap didn't mean it was shabby: it was as clean and comfortable as the motels so far.

Our clothes were getting dirty, so we went to a coin laundry we found online. In America and Canada a coin laundry is called a Laundromat. Apparently it's a word made from laundry and automatic.

Perhaps out of concern for the environment, the cheapest regular petrol had a sticker saying ethanol was added.
